These scenes he was once familiar with no longer existed. The pace of urbanization is like a vicious dog in pursuit, leaving the countryside in a state of disarray and losing all its poetry. Except for the fact that it was his birthplace, everything about that former village seemed to have been changed beyond recognition. This change made him both painful and confused. His rural origin and past rural experience made him almost innately rejected and uncomfortable with the purely materialistic civilized life in the city. He is like a thorn deeply pierced into the city's muscles, and is incompatible with this modern body. He even felt that even if he stayed in the city for another twenty years, he would still be a farmer on the Yalu River alluvial plain. This "foreigner" feeling is getting stronger and stronger. He is anxious to find his "home". However, this "home" is no longer a few old houses or acres of rice fields in the place of his birth. What he is looking for is a spiritual home, a harbor for the soul and a dwelling place for the soul.
