Today, with the rapid development of urbanization, the appearance and development characteristics of ancient Chinese cities, especially the most developed Jiangnan cities since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, have become one of the hot spots of academic research in recent years. However, in the past research on the history of cities in Jiangnan, academic circles focused on large cities such as Nanjing, Suzhou, and Hangzhou, and there was less research on ordinary administrative cities, which made the conclusion about the nature of Jiangnan cities lack a certain degree of convincingness. This book makes an in-depth study of more than 30 ordinary administrative cities in Jiangnan during the Ming and Qing Dynasties from two dimensions: geography and economy. It breaks through some of the traditional views of administrative cities in the academic world. It uses a large amount of empirical materials to prove that the development of Jiangnan cities in the Ming and Qing Dynasties was driven by socio-economic forces. Regardless of their origins, the formation of geographical space and the intensity of economic functions, they all have the characteristics of natural growth and are not the result of government planning. The traditional academic concept of China's "political city" may need to be revised.
