In the ancient civilized world, India and China each created unique literary theoretical systems. This book sets up twelve topics to conduct a comparative study of ancient literary theories in India and China. It aims to illustrate that the expression forms of ancient literary theories in China and India are very different, but the basic principles are consistent.

In the ancient civilized world, India, like China, was a well-deserved literary power. It produced the oldest collection of poetry in the Indo-European language family, two magnificent epics, rich myths, legends and fables, exquisite lyric poems, narrative poems, dramas and novels, as well as a unique system of literary theory. This book provides an overview of ancient Indian literature from the fifteenth century BC to the twelfth century AD, that is, the literature of the Vedic period, the epic period and the classical Sanskrit literature period. Among them, Sanskrit literature is the mainstream, including Pali and vulgar literature.
