The maritime defense pattern in Guangdong during the Ming Dynasty experienced a relatively complex evolution process, and this evolution was concentrated in the temporal and spatial changes in the coastal defense military command system. Based on the analysis of Guangdong's sea and land distribution pattern, coastal landform types, and coastal defense geographical conditions in the Ming Dynasty, this book discusses the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of Japanese pirates and pirate invasions along the Guangdong coast in the Ming Dynasty, the spatial deployment of coastal guards, water forts, and coastal defenses, as well as the impact of the opening of Macao on the coastal defense situation in Guangdong. Then, starting from the high-level structures of the military command system in Guangdong in the Ming Dynasty, such as the governor of Guangdong and Guangxi, the commander-in-chief of Guangdong, deputy commander-in-chief, and staff general, through a detailed analysis of the documents, we examined in detail the changes in their establishment, jurisdictions, and garrison locations, as well as the close relationship between this series of evolutions and the land and sea defense pattern of Guangdong.
