The story-telling-style urban atmosphere is mixed with the Mo Yan-style local texture. It not only has the hilarious plot of "four elders getting into trouble", but also the torture of human nature in the famine-turbulent times - the most cruel thing in the world is never evil, but the human heart devoured by greed.
