"Come Up for Breath: The First Half of My Life" is a novel by George Orwell, written on the eve of World War II. The protagonist of the novel, George Pauling, is a middle-aged man who sells insurance. He has begun to put on weight and has a wife and two children. On a bad morning as usual, he put on his newly made dentures and carried in his pocket the 17 pounds he had won from horse racing without telling his wife. He suddenly felt the need to go out and "take a breath." He walked on the street, ate meals he didn't dare to eat normally, smoked his favorite cigar, and drank wine. He felt completely renewed! He avoided his family and sneaked back to the small town where he lived in his childhood, hoping to relive the happy days of his childhood.
