After the founding of New China, there were two large-scale nationwide population movements. The first time was when educated youth went to the mountains and countryside starting in 1955. Countless urban people rushed to the vast world of rural areas with enthusiasm and became glorious educated youth; the second time was since the reform and opening up in 1978. Hundreds of millions of rural people or urban poor left their hometowns and became migrant workers. Both of these population flows are dominated by young people. The difference is that educated youths move from cities to rural areas, while most migrant workers move from rural areas to cities.
