Our Family History: the Years Written by Middle School Students

Editor-in-chief Li Yuanjiang

This book is the winning selection of the third national middle school students' historical records competition. "Writing family history" is a process for middle school students to understand themselves and realize independent education, emphasizing the leading position of students in the research process. They chose their own topics, had equal dialogues with the elders interviewed, were exposed to diverse and complex historical details through questions and answers, and then relied on their own efforts to find answers. In the process, a "sympathetic understanding" of family and history is developed. The book describes the ignorant girls who participated in the Cultural Revolution out of fun and enthusiasm, the young military doctors who worked tirelessly to rescue people after the Tangshan earthquake, the soldiers who went to the frontier for more than ten years and were only contacted by family letters, and the poor farmers who became bandits and smuggled themselves into other places. They are part of real history, they are ordinary people with stories around us. Since 2011, the competition has been successfully held for four times, with more than 10,000 students participating in each session and more than 1,000 participating schools.
