Publishing is an important medium for making ideas and knowledge public, and Shanghai is the birthplace and center of modern publishing in China. Before 1949, more than 80% of the country's publishing institutions were concentrated in Shanghai, and more than 90% of modern academic works were published in Shanghai. Shanghai's publishing industry led the trend of new knowledge dissemination and ideological progress in modern China. On October 29 and 30, 2022, the Department of History of Fudan University and the Museum of Modern Press and Publication of China co-sponsored the academic seminar on "Modern Publishing and the Dissemination of New Knowledge". Nearly 50 scholars from all over the country participated in the meeting and discussed seven topics: "Publishing and the Dissemination of New Knowledge", "Publishing and Cultural Exchange", "Publishing and Business Interaction", "Dictionary and Textbook Publishing", "Publishing and New Culture", "Publishing and Scientific and Technological Knowledge", and "Publishing and Political Activities". This book compiles more than 30 papers from this conference. The research covers diverse topics such as book history, reading history, printing, translation, editions and bibliography, and reflects the cutting-edge trends in publishing history research.
