Dayang Peng is the son of a landlord. He lost all his rich ancestral property due to his addiction to smoking, leaving only one cow. By chance, he killed his own cow to save the guerrillas who were trapped in a cave by the Japanese, and thus became brothers with the guerrilla captain. After liberation, Dayang Peng was classified as a poor peasant because he had nothing. Through Brother Ba, who has been promoted to deputy chief of staff of the provincial military region, Dayang Peng established contact with the upper class, solved many urgent needs for the villagers, and became an important and widely loved figure in the mountain village. The work successfully portrays the image of Dayang Peng, a middleman who is both eager for justice and lazy, and spends his life unconsciously under the influence of his own personality and the external environment. It depicts the different fates of a group of small people in mountain villages in the ups and downs of the great era.
