In 1599, Capuchin monks in Palermo, Sicily, Italy discovered some underground tombs under a monastery, and in the tombs there were some complete tools for making mummies. So they decided to try this technique on a monk who had just died. From that time until the practice was banned in 1880, the practice of mummification flourished in Sicily. To this day, people can still see corpses dressed in costumes from various periods and hanging high in varying degrees of decay.
