This book is the earliest work in China to systematically analyze contemporary avant-garde literature. It is also the first to discuss the issue of postmodernity that has become almost common knowledge in contemporary Chinese literature. It is one of the most cited works in the field of contemporary literature research. Over the years, its sensitivity, incisiveness, vigor and vividness have always attracted the attention of contemporary literary researchers.

This book is divided into two parts. The contents of the previous section "Hidden Worries of Modernity" include: "Replacement and Supplement: From Postmodernity to Modernity", "Resilience of Literature: Historicization and Personal Memory", "The Historical Void Under the Ghost Shadow", "Multiple Meanings of Memory: History "Returns" or Is Elsewhere", etc. The content of the second part of "Post-Contemporary Illusion" includes: "The Liberation of Memory: 'Private' and the Historical Trap", "Rewriting Hometown and the Flower of Evil in Postmodernity", "New Neo-Romanticism: The Metamorphosis of Postmodernity", etc.

This book is a relatively special textbook on the history of contemporary Chinese literature. What is special about it is that, like other literary histories, it contains descriptions of China's important writers, works, and literary trends since 1949. The author pays particular attention to the analysis of the history of ideas and the influence of foreign literature lingering in the history of literature.
