Novel occupies a central position in the hierarchical order of literary genres. However, in the context of Chinese literature, the rise of novels only has a history of more than a hundred years. Its status transformation depends on the vigorous advocacy and promotion of scholars of the late Qing Dynasty and the May 4th generation. The rise of the historiography of modern Chinese novels is not limited to literary and academic history, but is also an important phenomenon in the history of thought. Based on this, this book takes the study of the history of novels during the May 4th New Culture Movement as the research object, taking Lu Xun and Hu Shi as the entry point of the study, and regards them as "key figures" in the founding period of Chinese novel history. It can not only connect many characters and events in the founding period of Chinese novel history, but also cover the key factors that contributed to the rise of modern Chinese novel history such as writing, friendship, education, and publishing, enriching the understanding of Chinese novel history.
