Deep in the Totem
Fantasy图腾深处
Always Moving Forward
Lin Chuan had the same dream for eighteen years. In his dreams, there was always a white mist that could not be cleared away. In the mist, there were vague figures chanting in a language he could not understand. As a young teacher in the History Department of Sun Yat-sen University, he used reason to convince himself that this was just a malfunction of the nervous system - until that day he dug out a strange totem from a notebook of strange monsters from the Qing Dynasty. Thirty-six symbols on the outer circle are arranged in a ring, and the inner circle curves like a lock. Although it was his first time meeting him, he felt familiar and couldn't look away. What he didn't see was that the moment he turned around and looked out the window, the totem on the page moved. Following the clues, he traced step by step the stone pillar that had been forgotten for five hundred years deep in Danxia Mountain, and found an ancient jade engraved with the same totem under the pillar. Late at night when I put it on my chest, thick fog suddenly rose in the mountains, and in the fog appeared the same procession and chanting sounds as in the dream. Early the next morning, the jade pendant disappeared out of thin air, and there was a mark on his left chest that was exactly the same as the totem - as if he was born there. After returning to Guangzhou, the dream that lasted for eighteen years suddenly stopped. Just when he thought everything was over, the dream came again. This time, the voice in the fog was finally clear enough to be recognized-- "Finally... Wait... For you..." And that voice, this time, was extremely close to him. Those shadows say the time is coming. But was it Lin Chuan or the slowly growing mark on his chest that they were waiting for? You have been dreaming for eighteen years, and someone has been waiting for you in your dream for even longer.
