This book is a full-length historical novel written by Polish writer Sienkiewicz in 1896. It reflects the struggle between paganism and Christianity in Rome during the reign of the Roman tyrant Nero in the 1st century AD, revealing the theme of Christian martyrdom. In order to appreciate the fire, Nero ordered the city of Rome to be burned. Afterwards, the Christians were blamed, and they were rounded up and taken to the Colosseum to be devoured by wild beasts. The tyrant ordered the Christian Princess Lygia to be tied naked to the horns of a bull, and then ordered the warrior Welsh to fight the bull. The young general Vinicius flew into the Colosseum and called on the citizens to uphold justice and save the life of the princess. Amid the clamor of the citizens, Nero had to agree. Afterwards, he still secretly searched for Christian Peter. Peter encountered Christ on his way out of Rome. He knelt on the ground and asked, "Lord, where are you going?" Christ replied, "Because you have left my people, I am going to Rome to erect the cross again."
