This book is the first volume of Faulkner's short stories, including 20 stories in three parts. Including classic works such as "The Burning Stable" which won the O. Henry Award. Faulkner often wrote stories from some special identity perspectives, such as the perspective of children and idiots. "That Sunset" in this anthology is an example. Nancy, a black chef, had an affair with a white man and became pregnant. She was afraid of being discovered by her husband when she returned home, so she stayed at Mr. Compson's house. Her fears are conveyed to readers through the eyes of nine-year-old Quentin, seven-year-old Cady and five-year-old Jason, although these children do not understand what is happening. Their reactions also reflect the indifference of adult white people towards black people. Faulkner is also good at using legendary techniques and horror elements. Emily in "A Rose for Emily" sleeps with a corpse for many years, which makes people creepy and at the same time think about the underlying reasons why she satisfies her desires in this way. Women's sensitivity, sympathy and youthful consciousness are also displayed in Faulkner's writings. Emily has a strong will, but is ignored by the patriarchal society. Marriage consciousness is an important manifestation of women's individual consciousness, but in the tradition of southern society, their right to choose has been destroyed.
