There are three roads leading from Castle Rock to Fort View Recreation Park: Route 117, Pleasant Road, and the "Suicide Stairs." Every day this summer, twelve-year-old Gwendy Peterson would walk up the suicide stairs that clung to the cliff and were supported by sturdy iron bolts. For a week, Gwendy would meet a strange man sitting on a bench in the dark on a gravel path every time. He was wearing black jeans, a black jacket, a white shirt, and a small and neat black hat on his head. From then on, the black hat appeared frequently in Gwendy's nightmares...
