Pretending to Be White
General Fiction冒充白人
(us) Nelle Larson
Clare and Irene are both light-skinned black people who could pass for white if they wanted to. The two childhood friends met unexpectedly in a Chicago restaurant one day after twelve years of separation. At this time, the beautiful Claire has pretended to be white and married a wealthy white businessman named John Bellow who has racist thoughts but knows nothing about her racial identity. Eileen married a black doctor and lived a stable middle-class life in Harlem, although she occasionally pretended to be white for social needs. Because Claire has no friends and lives a lonely life after pretending to be white, she often visits Irene's house while her husband is away on business. She and Eileen's husband developed a mutual affection for each other and became obsessed with each other. The novel touches on multiple issues such as race, gender, and sexual orientation, and also shows the living conditions of the mixed-race people in New York in the 1920s.
