After Mother Left

(us) Michelle Zona

137K0

One day in May 2014, Michelle received a call and learned that her mother had cancer, and immediately returned to her hometown to take care of her mother. Michelle's mother is Korean and her father is American. She grew up in two cultures, but could not get close to either one. In adolescence, she was at odds with her mother because she was obsessed with her music dream. During the days when they were with their mother, the mother and daughter had conversations they had never had before. A few months later, her mother passed away. In order to relieve her grief, Michelle began to go to an Asian supermarket that her mother often visited, tried to make the Korean food that her mother had made for her, and sincerely wrote her inner confession. Struggling in the whirlpool of two cultures, Michelle was forced to re-examine her own identity. In this journey of looking back on love and loss, self-affirmation and pain healing, she recovered the taste, language and talent given to her by her mother, and also allowed her mother to be "reborn" in the space built by food and music.
