This book is a research monograph on animal history and social and cultural history. It mainly studies the first modern zoo in Japan, the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, which was established in 1882. Against the historical background of Japan's rapid modernization, the rise and fall of the empire, it narrates the history of this zoo from the Meiji Restoration period to the present day, and describes the specific functions and roles of this zoo. This book believes that this is the first zoo to be built independently from various influences in the Western world. It is not only a famous tourist attraction in Tokyo, Japan, but also has rich cultural connotations and symbolic meanings. On the one hand, it embodies the dramatic changes in Japan's politics, economy, society, culture and other aspects since the Meiji period from a unique perspective. On the other hand, it reflects on the interactive relationship between humans and animals, and humans and nature.
