Written in 1879, the book specifically explores why poverty not only still exists, but actually seems to increase as societies become wealthier. During the economic crisis in Europe and the United States, after traveling to Australia, India, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and domestic New York, San Francisco and other places, George felt deeply that "material progress not only cannot relieve poverty, but actually creates poverty." To this end, he wrote this book to examine the polarization issues that still plague us today. Sun Yat-sen praised this book and said, "It means that the more civilized the world is, the poorer mankind will be. Due to the improper equalization of economics, it advocates public ownership of land." Liao Zhongkai believes that the theories in this book are the ideological yeast of Sun Yat-sen's Three People's Principles.
