The Shenwu Army is Gloriously Powerful: the Martial Arts Activities of the Royal Family in the Ming Dynasty

(us) David Lu

268K0

Like most empires, the Ming court sponsored grand martial arts events to demonstrate dynastic strength and military might. In the first two hundred years of the Ming Dynasty, royal field hunts, polo matches, archery competitions, equestrian performances, school parades, and royal animal gardens aroused controversy on several occasions, forming a realm full of tension. Around them, the emperor and his ministers engaged in light and dark games and put forward contradictory claims on issues such as the power of the ruler, the relationship between monarch and ministers, and the role of martial elements. Lu Dawei fully excavated the poetry, prose and paintings of the Ming Dynasty. Against the background of the early modern history of the Eurasian continent, he analyzed the changes in the court culture of the Ming Dynasty based on military activities, and revealed the commonalities between the Ming Dynasty and the Timurid Khanate, the Mughal Empire and the Ottoman Empire.
