"A Brief History of the World at the British Museum" was written by the director of the British Museum and jointly produced by the British Museum and the BBC. It selects 100 items from the British Museum's 8 million collections and tells the story of 2 million years of human history. It lasted four years, mobilized more than 100 librarians, and involved more than 400 experts. When it was broadcast on the BBC, it set a record of 11 million people listening at the same time. As soon as the book was published, it ranked first on the major bestseller lists in the UK. The American version entered the New York Times non-fiction bestseller list in the first week after its release. It stayed on the list for more than 4 months and was selected as the Sunday Times History Book of the Year and the Daily Telegraph Best Book of the Year. The New York Times praised this as "a world history writing project that only the British Museum can accomplish in the world, and an unprecedented contribution in human history."
