In this work, which has been the work of the author Bolloten for more than half a century, he shows us a comprehensive picture of the Republican camp during the Spanish Civil War, subverting the general understanding of this war. The author develops two major themes using primary sources collected extensively over the years. First, he provides an in-depth and detailed description of the mass revolution triggered by the military rebellion of July 1936, allowing people to see that this revolution dramatically changed the political structure of the Republican-controlled areas, although some parties in the Republican camp took pains to downplay its significance; revolutionary committees suddenly appeared in countless towns and villages, forming a new economic structure and political power that was mainly controlled and managed by workers' organizations.
