The son of a wealthy family who lost his father when he was young finally returns to his native England, but he seems to be involved in a revenge mystery related to his father; the popular horse racing may be plotted, and the detective uses the past to turn the tables; the legendary gem "Portuguese Mirror" reappears, immediately arousing competition from many parties; the bicycle sport The rise of turmoil brings new fashions, but under the tide there is an undercurrent; an Oriental art collector dies at the feet of a god statue, and the family's despair, ancient curses and selfish greed are complicated; a will has been changed several times, evil tricks emerge in endlessly, and a human absurd drama is staged in a dilapidated old house. This book was published in 1897 and uses six short stories to tell the story of a private detective. Different from the decent detectives in the mystery novel craze in the 19th century, the protagonists of this book do whatever it takes to achieve their goals, and are willing to commit evil deeds such as theft, extortion, and murder for their own personal gain. The six stories included in the book include: "The Narrative of Mr. James Rigby", "The Case of the Janitor", "The Case of the Portuguese Mirror", "The Internal Affairs of Flying Cycle and Tire Co. Ltd", "The Case of Loftus Deacon" and "The Legacy of Old Carter". The third and fourth chapters of the book were adapted from the television series The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes, which aired from 1971 to 1973.
