America's Image of China (1931-1949)

(u. S.) T. Christopher Jespersen

222K0

This book describes the American public's image of China in the first half of the 20th century and its causes. The author believes that the image of China in the United States during this period was based on missionary passion, misled by the Luce media, strengthened by Pearl Buck's novels, and climaxed by Soong Meiling. However, this illusion of China had a positive effect on China at the time. It prompted the Roosevelt administration to adopt policies to sanction Japan and help China, and eventually repealed the racially discriminatory Chinese Exclusion Act.
