Let Me Inform You That Tomorrow Our Family Will Be Killed: Chronicle of the Rwanda Genocide

(u. S.) Philip Gurevitch

213K0

In 1994, the Hutus in Rwanda launched a comprehensive massacre against the Tutsis, killing at least 800,000 people in 100 days. The cumulative mortality rate of the Rwandan Holocaust was nearly three times that of the Jews who died in the Holocaust. Philip Gurevich traveled to Rwanda and its neighboring countries six times in an attempt to explore the causes of this humanitarian disaster. Through interviews with all parties involved - survivors, members of international organizations, and senior politicians including current Rwandan President Paul Kagame - Gurevich used a highly propulsive narrative to reconstruct the origins of the ethnic conflict in Rwanda, the terror and the chaotic and embarrassing post-disaster reality - massive population migration, the temptation of revenge and the demand for justice, overcrowded prisons and refugee camps. Is this a story between good guys and bad guys or just bad guys? To what extent does the international community bear responsibility for this? These questions drive this testimonial literature, making it a uniquely insightful analysis of the Rwandan genocide.
