In his youth, Zhu En liked to go alone to inaccessible woods and pretend to be back in the Middle Ages. Zhu En has no friends except his uncle Finn, a painter. She often lay on the Turkish rug with Finn, listening to music and drinking cider. On those weekends, Finn took her to movies and museums, gave her gifts, kept her secrets and drew pictures. They are the weirdest freaks in the world. Finn suddenly died of illness after leaving behind his unfinished painting "Tell the Wolves I'm Home", and Zhu En's world collapsed. She doesn't understand why her family hates Toby, the "special friend" at her uncle's funeral, and why her uncle never mentions Toby to her. When the truth gradually emerged, she realized the power behind silent love.
