Aloma was an orphan, raised by her uncle and aunt, and then sent to a missionary school in the closed mountains of Kentucky. In school, she learned to play the piano and dreamed of using this skill to escape to the wider outside world. After her lover Oren suffered a serious family accident, Aloma moved to the Oren family's tobacco farm, a wild and quiet place. Oren became increasingly alienated from Aloma due to family changes and the pressure to manage the farm independently. Aloma is in a completely unfamiliar environment, adapting to the changes in her identity and everything around her alone.
