The work tells the story of a battalion of officers and men led by the Soviet artillery captain Shabulov who was ordered to cross the Volga River, enter Stalingrad besieged by the enemy, and successfully defend three buildings. It shows the heroic and unyielding fighting spirit of Soviet soldiers and civilians, and creates a series of evocative heroes. "Days and Nights" is the earliest outstanding literary work in Soviet literature that reflects the Battle of Stalingrad. It won the Stalin Prize in 1946.
