This book traces the development history of Russian peasants from before Kievan Rus to the mid-17th century. Through the analysis of the social, economic status and political status of Russian farmers during this period, as well as the life, religion and customs of farmers in different stages, the development history of Russian farmers is expounded from the following three aspects: first, the development of Russian village communities, farmers and agriculture; second, the evolution of farmers' land ownership forms, land rent forms and their political status; third, the development process of farmers' economy, rural market and serfdom economy. It was during this period that the Russian peasants completed their identity transformation from free farmers to serfs. Serfdom was initially established, strengthened, and finally established, and profoundly affected the course of Russian history for hundreds of years.
