Chen Duansheng, a talented woman from the Qing Dynasty, wrote a masterpiece of tanci, which uses seven-character rhythmic language to form a long narrative poem. The story tells that the great scholar Meng Shiyuan had a daughter, Meng Lijun, who was unparalleled in talent and beauty. She was betrothed to Huangfu Shaohua, the son of Huangfu Jing, the governor of Yunnan. Kui Bi, the son of the patriarch Liu Jie, wanted to marry Li Jun but failed, so he tried every possible means to frame the Meng and Huangfu families. Lijun absconded in men's clothing, and later changed her name to donate to the proctor to take the exam. She won three yuan in a row, and was appointed as the Minister of the Ministry of War. Because she recommended Shaohua, who was highly skilled in martial arts, to resist the foreign invaders, she won a great victory. Shaohua was crowned king, and Lijun was also ranked three. Her father and brother, Weng and her son-in-law, were ministers in the same palace, but Lijun refused to recognize him. Finally, her identity was exposed due to drunkenness. Lijun was in a state of panic and vomited blood. The emperor learned that he wanted to force her into the palace and become a concubine. Lijun was furious and faced a dilemma. The original work was discontinued at this point, and was later continued by the female poet Liang Desheng and her husband Xu Zongyan in three volumes, describing Lijun's confession. The queen and Huangfu's family begged for mercy to save Lijun from death. The queen mother even recognized Lijun as a moth girl and named her Princess Baohe. She and Liang Suhua returned to Shaohua and became the royal princess.
