Aikawago was a bright young man, but he dropped out of school due to family poverty and was forced to become an apprentice in a classmate's home. He suffered from cold shoulder and bullying. After his mother passed away, at the age of fourteen, he came to the big city of Tokyo to work alone with the desire to find his father and change his destiny. At first, his life was like a boat in a storm, battered by wind and waves. First, he wandered on the streets and relied on funeral teams to beg for food. Later, he became an apprentice in a printing factory but was ridiculed and despised because of his status as a foreigner... However, the indifference of the bustling city could not dampen his passion for struggle. In the end, this stone on the roadside that everyone despised finally became the master of his life. "Stone on the Road" has not only been adapted for the big screen many times in Japan, but has also been adapted into TV series and animations. Moreover, in order to praise the achievements of the author Yuzo Yamamoto, the Ishikawa Cultural Foundation established the "Roadside Stone Literature Award" named after the work. The first winners of this award were announced in 1979, and have been awarded for 23 times so far. In 1986, the "Stone on the Road Youth Literature Award" was established to encourage outstanding literary works suitable for young children to read. Works by writers such as Tetsuko Kuroyanagi's "Little Bean by the Window", Kaori Ekuni's "My Little Bird", Mitsuyo Tsunoda's "I Was Kidnapped by My Father" have all won this award.
