"The Late Pascal" tells the story of Mattia Pascal, a rural librarian, who twice abandoned his original identity and sought another "self". The first time he quarreled with his wife and ran away angrily. People believed that he had slipped and drowned. He was forced to change his name to Mei Si and began to live a "mask". However, due to the loss of his true "self", he felt the pain of being abandoned by reality everywhere in his life, so he created the illusion that Meis drowned himself in a river and fled again, trying to restore his true "self" - Pascal's life, but he could never return to his original life.
