Croce reordered and edited the series of papers according to internal logical connections, combined with the special historical conditions of the 1920s and 1930s, to deepen and improve his historical views and historiographic theories. The book is divided into eight parts: history as thought and action; historicism and its history; history without historical problems; historical certainty and authenticity; history and politics; history and morality; prospects of history; and conclusion. Croce denies the transcendental necessity and causal necessity of historical philosophy, but affirms the logical necessity of history. Croce analyzes the characteristics of historical writings.
