"The Birth of Currywurst" is a novel by German writer Uwe Thiem, a magical story about war and peace, men and women, people and food. In 1945 during World War II, the British army had crossed the Elbe River and Germany was facing defeat. Bremer, a naval soldier, met Mrs. Brinker who worked in the Hamburg Food Bureau restaurant on his way back from vacation. An air raid brought two strangers together. Bremer became a deserter and hid in Mrs. Brinker's house, beginning a period of time full of secret passion. Soon after, however, the war ended abruptly. In order to keep Bremer, who was much younger than herself, Mrs. Bluck temporarily blocked the news of the end of the war from him. But the clues of the truce continued to emerge. Bremer was trapped in the room and became more and more impatient. Later, he finally learned the truth and returned to his family without saying goodbye. He left Mrs. Brinker and fell into loneliness again. ...
