Unseld firmly believes in the educational and transformative mission of publishing. Publishers must abandon their preference for extremes and excess and act in a game of imagination and seriousness. Publishers both conform to and criticize trends, serving the "sacred commodity" (in Brechtian terms)-books. The essence of a publisher's work can be summarized as: always preparing for works, always preparing for writers, always preparing for the creativity in his works, and helping him achieve impact.
