Sisyphus was punished by the gods. He had to push a boulder up the mountain, but the stone rolled back down the mountain due to its own weight. He had to go down the mountain and push the boulder up the mountain again, and so on. Camus believed that Sisyphus was an absurd hero. He devoted his whole body and mind to a seemingly ineffective cause, but his passion for life and contempt for God made himself extremely powerful and thus transcended the mercy of fate. Camus saw the absurd fate of life from this mythical story, and he tried to clarify the meaning of absurdity to people through speculation.
