"The Immoral Man" is a strongly autobiographical novel written by Gide. It tells the story of a man who violates traditional customs and attempts to follow his own personal preferences. In the story, the protagonist Michel and his wife Marceline traveled to North Africa and unfortunately contracted tuberculosis. When Marceline took care of him, she discovered that he had no love for her and had homosexual tendencies. After returning to France, Michel meets the amoral Menard, who advises him to forget the past and indulge in sensual pleasures. His wife Marceline already knew about it, and her illness added to her heartache. She soon died of depression and died in a foreign land.

Diary of Gide (collected Works of Gide)

Gide's diary, written from 1887 when he was fourteen until his death in 1950, is unique among all writers and artists of the twentieth century. From his diary, we can clearly see the formation of his moral values, his massive reading, the origin and experience of his writings, his homosexual proclivities and even the detailed experiences of his several sexual encounters. These contents are his minimally decorated "autobiography", making him a true artist and thinker, and another Montaigne.
