Shortly after World War II, a man who called himself Gunnar Hutunen came to a small town in the Lapland region of northern Finland. He bought the local mill by the river and worked diligently there. In the dead of night, Gunnar often couldn't help but imitate animal howls. People in the village could not tolerate his abnormality, so doctors and police teamed up to send him to a mental hospital. In order to defend the freedom of howling, Gunnar went through many difficulties and dangers, and finally escaped to the mountains and forests, becoming a legend in the village. The absurd stories in the village seem to reflect the microcosm of everyone's cramped living environment. After the novel came out, it became very popular in Europe and has been adapted into movies, comics, songs and other art forms several times.
