This book is the first volume in the "Cambridge History of China" series and was published by Cambridge University Press in 1986. This volume has a total of 16 chapters, covering the rise and fall of the Qin, Western Han, and Eastern Han empires, systems, laws, foreign relations, economic and social history, and ideological and cultural history. The content of ideological and cultural history accounts for about one-third of the total length of the book.
