New History of Rome

(eastern Rome) Zosimos

154K0

This book is the only work that has been handed down to this day by Zosimos, the treasurer and respondent of the Byzantine Empire in the second half of the fifth century AD. It narrates the history of the Roman Empire from the time of Augustus to 410 AD. Zosimos discusses two main issues in the book: the Roman Empire has declined; and the reasons for the decline of the Roman Empire. Regarding the latter, Zosimos made it clear: In his opinion, the weakening of traditional beliefs caused by head-of-state politics and the replacement of traditional sacrifices by Christianity is the reason for the decline of the country.
