"Chronic Innocence" is a novel about youth, friendship, the emergence of love and the disillusionment of illusions. It is narrated from the first-person perspective of Janus, a middle school student. Janus almost obsessively worships Tula, his classmate, and relies heavily on their friendship. Then Tura falls madly in love with the girl Heller who only wants to enjoy pure love. Janus tells the story of his uneasiness and confusion when he fell in love with both Tura and Heller at the same time, his own loss of self in the relationship between these three people, and his physical relationship with the girl Irene. Heller's mother, Mrs. Junkerson, broke into their little world like an evil queen, and ultimately brought about subversive changes in everyone's future and destiny.
