This book is a literary criticism of Yang Wanli's works written by the famous sinologist and translator Shi Jirui. The author places Yang Wanli's poetry in the social and artistic background of twelfth-century China, and explores the inextricable connections between the author's literary pursuits and active political activities, religious factors, philosophical thoughts, calligraphy and painting arts. Examine the artistic value and aesthetic qualities of Yang Wanli's works. This book is divided into eight chapters, focusing on Yang Wanli's life, literary theory, creative methods, creative themes, as well as the history of criticism and acceptance of Yang Wanli's poetry by later generations. The most prominent feature is that the author pays special attention to the relationship between Yang Wanli's poetry and Buddhism (especially Zen Buddhism). Yang Wanli is the subject of the author's doctoral thesis. In addition to this book, the author published a paper "Zen, Fantasy and Enlightenment in Yang Wanli's Poems" in the top Sinology journal "Bulletin" in 1974, which basically reflected some of his unique insights into Yang Wanli's research.
