"Shishuoxinyu" was compiled by Liu Yiqing, King of Linchuan in the Southern Song Dynasty. It is a representative work of "note novels" in the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, and includes 36 categories in total. The book mainly records people and words, using short words to record the words, deeds and anecdotes of the scholar group from the late Eastern Han Dynasty to the Wei and Jin Dynasties. It focuses on showing the turbulent and divided era of the Wei and Jin Dynasties, and reflects the social atmosphere at that time that valued talent, good wit, good conversation, and respect for nature.

It was originally called "Shishuo". In the Tang Dynasty, it was called "Shishuo New Book" or "Shishuo Xinyu". The latter became the proper name of the book around the Northern Song Dynasty. "Shishuoxinyu" is the germ of ancient Chinese novels. Its concise, meaningful and vivid descriptions are difficult to match by many imitators in later generations. This book is not only of great literary significance, but also records mostly real people and true events, and has always been valued by historians.

The book contains 36 chapters and more than 1,000 articles, reflecting the Wei and Jin Dynasties, especially the style of celebrities at that time. Since its birth, the "Wei and Jin Dynasties style" with its unrestrained, frank and detached style has profoundly influenced Chinese literati and cultural history, making it a must-read classic for Chinese people. This edition of "Shishuoxinyu" has been carefully translated by the popular writer Koiwai. In addition to the translation, he has written more than 1,700 annotations and more than 500 brief reviews to help us explore the charm of classic ancient books.
