"Don't trust people wearing red shoes"
-
2005, July 1.
Sunny.
But in Shi Gui's memory, there was no sunshine that day, only the thin and sharp light like a blade in the crack of the door, cutting through the darkness in front of him.
He couldn't remember why he was there. The memory is like an old photo that has been soaked in water. The picture is blurred, leaving only a large area of impenetrable darkness and a trace of light that is so clear that it almost burns the retina.
He followed the woman's screams to find his way.
The sound didn't come from the ears, but climbed up the spine, cold and sticky.
He was led by the sound and walked forward step by step in the sticky darkness.
Finally, he stood in front of the door.
The sour smell of rotten wood, mixed with the suffocating feeling of accumulated dust, penetrated the nostrils arbitrarily.
He held his breath and brought his eyes closer to the slit of light.
In the room.
The woman was pinned down on the table, struggling as if she were drowning.
The man pressing her had an ordinary face, except for his eyes, which were as empty as two deep wells. All the light that entered could not make a single ripple.
A silver light flashed in the man's hand.
It wasn't a knife, at least not exactly.
It is more like a wisp of condensed moonlight, a wisp of tangible chill. It began to swim along the woman's skin, from the violent rise and fall of the chest, to the neck as tight as a bow, to the fingers curled up in fear...
The luster was almost caressing, sliding along every inch of the contours, not even the smallest wrinkles between the fingers.
It's like tracing a piece of art.
No wounds, no blood.
There are only the woman's pupils that gradually widen and lose focus, and the limpness that finally returns to deathly silence.
Then Shigui saw it.
It was a figure cut out of pure darkness, with clear edges and a void deeper than the surroundings.
That is the shadow of a woman.
It stood up silently, like a prisoner who had broken free of his chains, stretching and extending on the wall.
It seemed to feel Shigui's gaze and turned its head slightly.
It obviously has no eyes or face, but Shi Gui knows.
It's looking at him.
It's freeing.

Many years have passed, and every detail of July 1, 2005 is still like a ghost, dragging him back to that door in countless late nights.
He chewed on the fear of that moment.
What he witnessed was not killing, but a quieter, more essential horror.
Since then, Shi Gui has not seen the woman again, nor has he seen it again.
But where will it go?
The most important thing is, that day, did it... Really see him?
