The LORD said to Cain, Why are you angry? Why did your face change?
If you do well, won't you be accepted? If you don't do well, sin is lurking at the door. It will desire you, but you will subdue it.
Cain was talking to his brother Abel, who were in the field. Cain got up and struck his brother Abel, killing him.
The LORD said to Cain, Where is Abel your brother? And he said, I know not: am I my brother's keeper?
The LORD said, "What have you done?" Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground.
The earth has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. Now you shall be cursed from this land.
If you cultivate the land, the land will no longer serve you. You will be a wanderer on the earth.
Cain said to the LORD, My punishment is too severe, beyond what I can bear.
Now you have driven me out of this land, so that I will not see your face. I will be a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.
The LORD said to him, "Whoever kills Cain will be repaid sevenfold." So the LORD put a sign on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.
