Christmas Eve 1981.
Queens, New York, USA.
Mary, a retired military doctor, served the last dish. While wiping her hands with her apron, she stopped her grandchildren from playing around the dining table.
One of the boys named Billy heard this and washed his hands obediently. After washing his hands, he didn't rush to sit on the chair. He just looked at the old man at the other end of the dining table who had been sitting in that position all afternoon, and then secretly followed his grandfather.
Gorgart felt that his precious grandson wanted to ask something, so after hanging the last Christmas star on the Christmas tree, he turned around and picked him up, asking softly.
Billy carefully leaned close to his ear and pointed to the old man sitting at the dining table.
It was a man of the same age as his grandfather, but his whole body exuded an indescribable, lifeless smell. He had done nothing all afternoon, just sat there dreamily. Billy would even doubt whether he would blink.
As soon as Billy comes to his grandfather's house, he will see this weirdo sitting somewhere blankly, like a doll that can be manipulated by others, indifferent to anything.
This made him uneasy.
Gorgat hesitated for a moment.
His expression became extremely bitter.
He put his body on his back, hugged his grandson and stared at the glass window, seeming to be thinking about something.
But little Billy could only see the night view of the United States in the 1980s through the glass. There was snow outside, and the street lights that were turned on seemed insignificant compared with the Christmas lights inside the house. He was greedy for the warmth in the room, so he simply stopped looking and turned to look at the glasses on the bridge of his grandfather's nose.
Gorgat sighed.
"He was a war hero, Billy, and a prisoner of war."
Billy blinked in confusion.
"I owe him and Peter so much that it's not even finished."
How to compensate?
Gorgat didn't know and could only keep running away.
"Forget it, you still don't understand, right?" He adjusted his thoughts again.
"He is my lifelong best friend, grandpa. The way he looks now, he is probably concentrating on talking to the angels."
"So that's it!" Billy looked back at the old man who was still stunned with some admiration.
…
Golgart breathed a sigh of relief in the deserted area.
"Still can't look into those eyes?"
Another bitter smile.
