The wind in September of that year still carried the residual warmth of late summer. Yu Chen stood downstairs in the university dormitory and counted the cracks in the floor tiles, carrying a canvas bag with a fertilizer advertisement printed on it. He didn't know that when he opened the door of 602, he would bump into someone who lived in two dimensions with him - the watch on Qi Yu's wrist was enough for his hometown's harvest for a year; and the old sweater he stuffed into the suitcase had frayed threads on the cuffs.
Later, someone said that they were birds and fish, one building a nest in the clouds and the other digging for food in the mud. But only Yu Chen knew that when Qi Yu pushed the lemon black tea in front of him, the water droplets on the wall of the cup were as hot as the sweat on his palms; only Qi Yu understood that when Yu Chen stayed up late in the library, the rustling of the pen tip across the paper made him more at ease than the piano music at the family dinner.
There is no fairy tale about who saves the other in this story, only two angular souls who learn to put away their thorns while stumbling, and use their own clumsy ways to warm up an asymmetrical dependence. Just like the sunflowers in the Longnan Mountains, they will eventually look up at the moon in Shanghai, and the hands that are used to wearing silk will begin to understand the warmth hidden in the coarse shirts.
