In the late spring of 1949, the situation along the southeast coast was tense, and Xingcuo Village was shrouded in the clouds of war. Wang Yidao, a member of the underground organization, asked his younger brother Wang Yan to take his nephew Gang Da to Zhongcuo. On the way, Wang Yan died trying to distract the pursuers.
In April of the same year, Wang Yidao and three other brothers discussed the rape in a secret cellar. During this period, the third uncle blew the conch horn. Later, the third uncle died and the second uncle was arrested. Wang Yidao succeeded in hoeing off the security chief Wang Tucai and was wanted by the Kuomintang.
While on the run, Wang Yidao hid in the house of widow Wu Fang, who cleverly drove away the security chief. The two had a one-night stand. Although Wu Fang knew that her husband was executed by Wang, she still understood him and prepared things to see him off. Wu Fang was punished for being pregnant and became disabled by picking on her hamstrings. She raised her daughter Wang Panpan by herself. Wu Fang had passed away when Wang Yidao came back, and he was filled with guilt.
Later, Wang Yidao rescued his second uncle Wang Zhongyi in the cabin, and the two climbed to Lantau Island through hardships. Wang Yidao had shrapnel in his leg. When he took over the county government on August 23, his second uncle died to protect him.
Chen Sanniang and Wang Yidao from the Zhongcuo underground party organization went from pretending to be a couple to becoming a real couple, and were recognized by the original aunt. Wang Huoda played the erhu to convey signals and remember his uncle. When he participated in the war, his erhu was destroyed and he brought back pieces of wood. In the spring of 1953, my uncle resigned and returned to his hometown. He buried the machete, looked at group photos, and recalled the past years.
